Sleep apnea is one of the most common forms of sleep disorders, affecting over 18 million Americans. During sleep, breathing patterns are disturbed by the relaxation of the airway muscles. This causes loud snoring, temporary pauses in breathing and frequent waking episodes. One of the most effective treatments for this problem is continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP, which provides patients with a constant supply of pressurized air during sleep, thus avoiding the unpleasant symptoms. The REMStar Pro with C-Flex Plus is one of the most advanced machines available and is designed to make small adjustments to air pressure automatically to provide the most effective and comfortable treatment. You can also adjust pressures manually, under a clinician's direction.
Connect the REMStar machine to a power supply and switch it on. Check the display to ensure that it is illuminated and that it displays four squares titled "Therapy," "DR flex," "Info" and "Set up."
Enter the clinician's setup menu. Turn the central dial until the setup option is highlighted. Press and hold down the central knob and arrow key together until you hear the machine bleep twice. This will occur after approximately 5 seconds.
Select setup again from the menu by turning the dial. Press the central knob once to enter the program.
Turn the dial to highlight "IPAP." This setting relates to the inhalation pressure. To change it, press the central knob once, turn the dial to adjust the setting to the required value, then press the central knob again to save it.
Turn the dial again to highlight "EPAP." This setting relates to the exhalation pressure. To change it, press the central knob once, turn the dial to adjust the setting to the required value, then press the central knob again to save it.
Return to the main menu by selecting "back" from the clinician's menu, then "exit" from the first setup menu. The machine is now ready for use.
You should only change the prescribed settings on you REMStar after discussion with your health care professional.
